CARL ALBERT CMHC PROJECT RECOGNIZED

“Care of the Patient in Seclusion and Restraint,” a project designed by the Carl Albert Community Mental Health Center in McAlester, was recognized with a “Governor’s Commendation” at “Quality Oklahoma Team Day 2005.”

The May 5 event is held annually at the state capitol to honor state agencies that develop money-saving projects.

Projects receiving the honor are those that display results, innovation and use quality-management techniques resulting in taxpayer savings.

The Carl Albert CMHC project was designed to ensure 100 percent positive patient care regarding the issue of “seclusion and restraint,” which is considered to be a last-resort psychiatric treatment intervention used only when all other treatment fails, and a patient has become dangerous to self or others. Seclusion and restraint is a high-risk aspect of care, and has the potential to result in injury or even death if improperly managed.

Carl Albert CMHC has one of the lowest seclusion and restraint rates in the nation, and – because of the project – now has a 100 percent positive patient care program in place.

Carl Albert CMHC project team members included Penny Demarcus, Karen Lawrence, Andi Stangl, Scott Davis, Pauline Wilbur, Vicki Dugan, Tammy Covey, Kenny Zummer, Cletis Shelby, Betsy Dew, Bonnie Anderson, Charles Glenn, Donna Glenn, Jo Wallace, Kevin Rentie, Jeremy Lewis, Mike Maffeo, Howard Zummer and William Windham.

A state-run facility of the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services, Carl Albert CMHC is based in McAlester, with satellite facilities in Atoka, Heavener, Holdenville, Hugo, Idabel and Stigler.
